What 3+2 machining describes
In 3+2 axis CNC machining, the machine positions the workpiece or tool at an angle and then performs a cut using the three linear axes. The orientation is indexed between operations. This differs from continuous five-axis machining, where multiple axes move in coordination during a cutting path.
When indexed positioning may be considered
Indexed setups can be considered when features on several faces need access but the tool orientation does not need to change continuously during the cut. The choice depends on feature locations, clearances, datums and surface requirements. A part should not be assigned to 3+2 only because it has angled faces.
Make datum relationships explicit
Show how the part is located and identify the dimensions that relate features across faces. Critical bores, holes, pockets and interfaces should be called out from clear datums. Include section views or notes where they explain the intended setup or feature relationship.
Compare neighboring process options
Review our continuous 5-axis machining page for paths that require coordinated motion. The 5軸ミリング能力 page covers the broader process scope. These pages address different machining strategies and should not be treated as interchangeable terms.
Submit the part for review
Provide the 3D model and drawing with material, quantity, datums, critical dimensions, finish and inspection requirements. The team can assess tool access and setup strategy for the specific part. Tolerances and acceptance criteria are confirmed against the drawing rather than assumed from the process name.
