Fabrication Guidelines for 8620 Alloy Steel

Carburizing Strategy:
8620 is designed to be carburized. This adds carbon to the surface, allowing it to reach high hardness (60+ HRC) while the low carbon core remains ductile. Tip: Ideal for parts subject to high shock and heavy surface wear.

Machinability:
In its annealed state, 8620 has excellent machinability (approx. 65% of 1212). It shears cleanly and responds well to standard carbide tooling. Tip: Maintain sharp tools to prevent surface tearing.

Distortion Control:
Quenching can cause dimensional changes. Tip: We recommend leaving 0.2mm to 0.4mm of grinding stock on critical diameters to be finished after the hardening cycle.

Weldability:
8620 can be welded easily in the annealed state using standard methods. However, welding after case-hardening is not recommended as it will destroy the surface properties.
