Specify the approved metal
Custom metal machining services cover parts made to a customerâs design, but the material callout must come from the approved drawing or specification. Identify the grade or standard, condition where relevant, quantity, part number, and current revision. Do not treat different metals as interchangeable based on a broad category.
Describe geometry and functional features
Provide the drawing and model when available. Mark bores, threads, mating faces, slots, pockets, datums, and dimensions that affect assembly or function. State which dimensions need inspection records and which follow the general drawing standard.
Define surface and secondary operations
Reference any required finishing, coating, heat treatment, or other secondary operation and identify the affected surfaces. Clarify the process sequence and whether final dimensions apply before or after those operations.
Review material alternatives carefully
If an alternative metal is proposed, have the responsible design authority review its effect on function, compatibility, finish, and inspection. Record the approved change in a controlled revision before production.
Compare the requested scope
Ask each supplier to quote the same material, quantity, operations, finish, inspection, and delivery terms. Request written assumptions and exclusions so the quote reflects the intended metal part.
