Make Thread Requirements Measurable

A complete thread callout and mating context reduce ambiguity between the machined part and the assembly requirement.

Identify the Thread Standard

State the thread form and standard, size, pitch and required class or fit. Do not rely on a model alone for acceptance criteria.

Show Thread Depth and Runout

Dimension full thread depth, entry, relief and any runout or clearance requirements needed by the design.

Clarify Internal or External Features

Identify whether the thread is internal or external, right- or left-hand, and how it relates to surrounding geometry.

Define How the Thread Will Be Checked

State any gaging, inspection record or mating-part check needed for acceptance.

Thread Callouts for CNC-Machined Parts

Threaded parts need complete drawing information

Threaded parts machining is not defined by the word "thread" alone. The drawing should identify the thread form or standard, nominal size, pitch, internal or external type, handedness and class or fit. Include the material and part quantity so the feature can be reviewed in its manufacturing context.

Dimension depth and surrounding geometry

State the required full thread depth and identify lead-in, relief, counterbore, clearance or runout features where they affect assembly. Show the relationship to the part datum and nearby features. A blind hole may need a defined usable thread depth separate from its drilled depth.

Connect the thread to its mating part

Include the mating-part callout or assembly context when it helps confirm the intended fit. If the application needs a particular sealing, locking or engagement condition, state the requirement. Do not assume thread fit from a generic model or an unverified tolerance note.

Plan inspection with the callout

Identify whether a thread gage, measurement record or mating-part check is required. The inspection method and acceptance requirement should be agreed for the drawing. For process-specific context, see our les services de filetage CNC page and options de filetage.

Préparer une demande d'usinage

Send the drawing and 3D model when available, plus material, quantity, thread callouts, critical dimensions, finish and inspection needs. The team can review the part and clarify any incomplete thread requirements before confirming the quotation.

Threaded Parts Machining Questions

Specify thread form, fit and inspection needs on the controlled drawing.

What information belongs in a thread callout?

+

Identify the thread standard or form, size, pitch, internal or external type, handedness and required class or fit. Include thread depth and inspection criteria where needed.

Should I specify the usable thread depth separately?

+

Yes, when the required engagement differs from the drilled-hole depth. Dimension full thread depth and any entry, relief or runout features relevant to assembly.

How should I communicate a left-hand thread?

+

State left-hand thread explicitly in the drawing callout and identify the feature location. Do not rely on a visual model alone to convey handedness.

How are machined threads inspected?

+

Inspection depends on the thread specification and acceptance plan. State whether gaging or a measurement record is required and confirm the method for the specific part.

Can a thread be changed to a different size during machining?

+

A thread change alters the design requirement and should be approved by the design owner before production. Submit the controlled drawing that defines the intended thread.
