Custom metal prototypes with a clear test purpose

Jucheng provides metal rapid prototyping for design development and assembly review. Before selecting a manufacturing route, state what the prototype must demonstrate: shape, mating fit, motion, thermal behavior or a defined mechanical test. Those purposes do not necessarily require the same material condition, finish or inspection scope.

When CNC machining is a practical route

CNC machining removes material from stock to create the specified part. It can suit prototypes with accessible pockets, holes, mating faces and turned features. Specify the alloy and stock condition when the test depends on material behavior. A prototype cut from a billet does not automatically reproduce a future casting, forging or printed part.

Tool access, internal corner radii, workholding and stock availability still matter. There are size and geometry limits to review; CNC prototyping is not an unlimited-size process. Heat treatment, deburring, coatings and inspection may be needed even when the starting material is already in the requested grade.

When the geometry calls for another route

Closed internal passages and lattice features can make machining from solid stock impractical. Submit those features for a route review rather than assuming they can be milled. Metal additive processes have their own requirements for supports, powder removal, orientation, heat treatment and finishing.

DMLS is a laser powder-bed fusion process that melts metal powder layer by layer. The names DMLS and SLM should not be used as a simple distinction between partly sintered and fully melted parts. For functional testing, confirm the selected process, alloy, orientation and post-processing rather than assuming printed properties match wrought stock.

Choose acceptance criteria for the test

  • Assembly fit: identify mating dimensions, locating datums, thread requirements and coating allowance.
  • Functional testing: state material condition, applied loads or temperatures, and any records required by your test plan.
  • Appearance review: identify visible surfaces, edge treatment and the intended finish sample.
  • Design iteration: label the revision and identify features that may change after the first trial.

Decide whether dimensions must be accepted before or after final finishing. If the prototype uses a substitute material or a different route from production, record that difference when interpreting test results. A successful fit check is not proof of fatigue life or approval for an end-use application.

What to include in your prototype RFQ

Send the controlled drawing and CAD model, alloy and condition, test purpose, quantity, critical features, finish, inspection records and delivery destination. Tell us which features are essential and which can change for manufacturability. We confirm the feasible route and project quotation. Price and delivery depend on the agreed scope and material availability; the page does not promise a fixed price or universal turnaround.

Preguntas antes de solicitar una cotización

Confirme el alcance del proyecto antes de pedir piezas personalizadas.

Does metal rapid prototyping only mean 3D printing?

+

No. CNC machining is also a prototyping route. The choice depends on geometry, material, test purpose, quantity and required finishing.

Will a CNC prototype behave exactly like the production part?

+

Not necessarily. Alloy condition, stock form, manufacturing route and finishing can affect the result. If production uses casting, forging or additive manufacturing, record the differences before drawing conclusions from prototype tests.

Can you machine a fully enclosed internal channel from solid stock?

+

Ordinary milling requires tool access. Enclosed geometry needs a review of another manufacturing route, a split design or another agreed approach. Submit the complete model rather than assuming the feature can be milled.

Are DMLS parts only partially sintered?

+

That is not a sound description of current DMLS metal powder-bed fusion. DMLS melts metal powder layer by layer. Material behavior still depends on the selected alloy, process and post-processing; it is not automatically identical to wrought stock.

How are prototype price and delivery confirmed?

+

Send the drawing revision, CAD model, alloy and condition, quantity, test purpose, critical features, finish, inspection needs and destination. Price and lead time are confirmed in the project quotation, including any material procurement and secondary operations.
