The bore or pilot may establish the rotational axis; a shoulder or face locates the gear axially; a keyway, spline, or clamping feature transfers torque. If these interfaces are not concentric or square to the functional datum, a correctly generated tooth profile can still run with excessive runout or poor contact.

First identify what the drawing actually controls: module or diametral pitch, tooth count, pressure angle, helix angle, backlash, tooth thickness, profile, lead, and any specified accuracy grade. Then identify the locating datum scheme and the critical blank features. A general note such as “precision gear” does not define these relationships. It is better to state the controlling gear standard and edition, functional datums, units, and acceptance criteria directly.

Also distinguish a gear blank from a finished gear. A CNC-turned blank with a milled keyway is not proof that the teeth meet a profile requirement. A specialized tooth-cutting process may form the teeth, followed by CNC turning or milling to finish the bore, hub, faces, and mounting details. Scope should say who performs each operation.

Choose a process route by gear geometry

Spur and helical gears are often produced by generating processes such as hobbing or shaping when the geometry and production plan suit those methods. Internal gears, bevel gears, worms, racks, and restricted-access features introduce different tool and machine requirements. CNC milling can be appropriate for some low-volume, prototype, or nonstandard geometries, but it is not automatically interchangeable with a dedicated gear process. Tool form, cutter reach, machine kinematics, material condition, and inspection all influence feasibility.

Part need

Route to evaluate

Критерий выбора

Bore, hub, shoulders, gear blank

CNC turning; milling for slots or patterns

How are axis and face datums established?

External spur or helical teeth

Hobbing, shaping, or validated CNC milling

What tooth accuracy and measurement are required?

Internal teeth or limited access

Shaping, broaching, or geometry-specific tooling

Can the tool reach the full depth and relief?

Prototype or unusual tooth geometry

Compare CNC toolpath with dedicated tooling

Must it prove functional mesh or only fit?

Compare routes against tooth form, quantity, material, lead time, and required evidence—not simply the machine label. A process review should identify the operation that generates the teeth and the method that verifies them. For complex tooth accuracy, confirm whether inspection requires a gear analyzer, a defined master/mating part, or another specified method.

Where CNC machining adds value

CNC turning can establish cylindrical locating features and axial faces on a blank. Milling can produce keyways, flats, cross-holes, slots, bolt circles, and reliefs. Combining operations may reduce handling when geometry and access allow, but each re-clamp can affect datum transfer. A process plan should make clear which surfaces are finished together and how the locating reference is recovered afterward.

Tool access and workholding deserve early review. A deep, narrow keyway may call for a long tool that is more prone to deflection. A thin web or tall hub may move under cutting force or clamping pressure. A bore close to a shoulder can complicate tool clearance and deburring. These conditions do not automatically make the part unmachinable; they identify where feature depth, wall thickness, cutter reach, clamping zones, and inspection access need to be considered together.

Material and heat treatment change the sequence. A soft blank intended for later hardening differs from a pre-hardened part or a finished hardened gear. Heat treatment may shift dimensions, so the drawing and process plan should state which features are machined before treatment, which may need finishing afterward, and when critical dimensions are inspected. Avoid applying one blanket “gear tolerance” to the whole part; specify each functional characteristic. On the blank, relevant checks may include bore diameter, face runout, bore-to-datum concentricity, shoulder position, and keyway size or location. On the teeth, the drawing may require profile, lead, pitch variation, tooth thickness, runout, or contact checks. These are distinct characteristics: a dimensional check of the outside diameter cannot establish tooth accuracy.

Define the inspection datum and condition. Note whether measurements occur before or after heat treatment, coating, or deburring; specify units and standard edition; and state whether a first-article report or lot report is required. If the assembly depends on backlash or contact pattern, identify the mating gear or master and the test condition. A CMM can measure many part relationships, but it may not replace a dedicated gear measurement when tooth geometry is the acceptance criterion.

Where tight tolerances matter, agree on the measurement method before production. Ambiguous datums can produce conflicting results even when the machining route is stable.
