Describe the material and current condition
Grinding hardened steel requires the supplier to understand the specified material and the part condition entering the operation. Provide the material callout, any applicable heat-treatment requirement, current drawing revision, and the order quantity. Do not substitute a different condition without design approval.
Define the surfaces and final dimensions
Mark the faces, diameters, bores, or other surfaces to be ground. Show datums and final dimensions, including form and finish controls where the design requires them. Identify critical edges, shoulders, and adjoining features that must be preserved.
Clarify stock and process sequence
Where the part has prior machining or heat treatment, state the relevant sequence and starting dimensions if they are controlled by the drawing. Identify any stock allowance and the final acceptance condition. Resolve unclear notes before the operation is quoted.
Set the inspection requirements
State how critical features should be checked and what records are required. If the order has a specified inspection condition, reference it directly. The supplier should confirm the requested scope and raise questions when the drawing does not define acceptance.
Compare quotes with the same requirements
Use the same material, condition, revision, quantity, grinding surfaces, finish, and inspection scope for each quote. Ask suppliers to state any assumptions about prior operations, records, and delivery.
