Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V)

Titanium Grade 5 (Ti-6Al-4V) is the "workhorse" of the titanium industry, accounting for over 50% of global titanium usage. It is an alpha-beta alloy that can be heat treated to achieve high strength while maintaining good ductility and formability. It is significantly stronger than Grade 2 but harder to machine due to its toughness and poor thermal conductivity. At Jucheng Precision, we have mastered the art of machining Grade 5. Utilizing specialized cooling strategies and rigid setups, we produce high-precision components for the Aerospace (engine parts) and Medical (implants) industries that require the ultimate combination of lightweight performance and durability.

Titanium Grade 5 Machining Capabilities

Capability Technical Description Jucheng Advantage
5-Axis Simultaneous Milling Machining complex aerospace airfoils and medical implants with organic shapes from solid Ti-6Al-4V blocks. Our advanced Haas/Mazak machines provide the rigidity needed to cut this tough alloy without vibration, ensuring accurate profiles.
High-Pressure Coolant (HPC) Using 1000 PSI through-spindle coolant to blast chips away and force heat removal from the cutting zone. Critical for Grade 5 to prevent work hardening and tool failure caused by heat concentration.
Swiss Turning Producing high-precision bone screws and fasteners with thread whirling technology. We hold ISO 13485 certification, ensuring medical-grade quality and traceability for all titanium implants.
Deep Pocketing Removing large amounts of material to create lightweight aerospace structural frames. We use trochoidal milling paths (dynamic milling) to extend tool life and reduce cycle times on tough titanium parts.

Fabrication Guidelines for Ti-6Al-4V

Heat Buildup:
Grade 5 has extremely low thermal conductivity. Heat stays in the tool, not the chip. Tip: Low cutting speeds (SFM) and high feed rates are essential to shear the metal before it hardens.

Tooling:
Use carbide tools with a high positive rake and a specialized coating (like TiAlN). Replace tools before they get dull; a dull tool will instantly work-harden the surface, scrapping the part.

Flammability:
Titanium chips and dust are flammable. Tip: We use strict fire safety protocols and water-based coolants during machining.

Primary Applications

Aerospace Structures
Turbine blades, discs, and airframe fasteners. Chosen for its high strength-to-weight ratio and heat resistance.

Medical Implants (ISO 13485)
Hip joints, bone plates, and dental implants. Ti-6Al-4V promotes osseointegration (bone growth) and is biocompatible.

Automotive Racing
Connecting rods, valves, and suspension springs to reduce reciprocating mass and withstand high RPMs.

Marine Subsea
Propeller shafts and ROV frames requiring high strength and immunity to saltwater corrosion.
