Fabrication Guidelines for 12L14 Steel<\/h3>\n

The Lead Factor:<\/strong>
\nThe “L” in 12L14 stands for Lead. This acts as an internal lubricant and chip breaker. Tip:<\/strong> This makes it the “easiest” steel to machine, but it also means the material cannot be welded safely due to lead fumes.<\/p>\n

Non-Weldable Warning:<\/strong>
\n12L14 is considered non-weldable.<\/strong> Welding causes extreme brittleness and hazardous toxic fumes. Tip:<\/strong> If your assembly requires welding, choose 1018 steel instead.<\/p>\n

Heat Treatment:<\/strong>
\n12L14 is not through-hardenable. Like 1018, it can only be Case Hardened to improve surface wear resistance. Tip:<\/strong> Ideal for high-speed parts that need a hard “skin” but a tough core.<\/p>\n

Rust Protection:<\/strong>
\n12L14 has poor corrosion resistance. Tip:<\/strong> Parts should be Zinc Plated, Cadmium Plated, or coated in Black Oxide immediately after machining to prevent oxidation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n
